Insiders say Mutjavikua blindly pushed through the deal and that board members appear to have been caught napping, with some saying no board resolution can be traced when the decision was made to disinvest from Nam-mic. The chairperson of the LIH board, Elia Manga, could not say if there was indeed a board resolution to pullout from Nam-mic, saying it was before his time. The suspension has heightened tensions further within the divided trade union federation, with more information emerging about conflicts of interest.

Only recently did the board decide to do its fiduciary duties by going through several deals done under Mutjavikua. Among those is what the union gained, if anything at all, from the sale of Ongopolo Mining and Processing Ltd. Questions are also being asked about Mutjavikua's involvement with Weatherly the company that bought Ongopolo and Namibia Custom Smelters.

This week will also see other hearings in Istanbul including journalists from opposition Cumhuriyet newspaper who are standing trial on charges of aiding and abetting terrorist organisations. One of Turkey's acclaimed authors Asli Erdogan will appear before a court to. In December she was released pending trial, after days of pre-trial detention. Last week, an Istanbul court ordered the release on judicial control of eight human rights activists including Amnesty International's Turkey director Idil Eser, as well as a German and a Swede.

The cases involving journalists have received criticism from human rights advocates who claim the government is seeking to stifle dissent. Somali security chiefs sacked Repeated attacks prompt government action Following a series of deadly attacks, the Somali government has fired both its intelligence and police chiefs in a bid to secure accountability, it says. The death toll from a deadly attack on a hotel in Mogadishu rose to 27 on Sunday, prompting the Somali government to sack its police and intelligence chiefs.

The move came after al-Qaeda aligned Shabaab gunmen staged coordinated bomb attacks Saturday outside the Nasa Hablod Hotel 2 before storming the building. Two weeks ago, Mogadishu was hit by a massive truck bombing that killed people in the troubled country's worst-ever attack. Saturday's carnage was unleashed when a car bomb exploded outside the hotel entrance followed by a minibus loaded with explosives going off at a nearby intersection.

The gunmen then rushed into the popular hotel, launching a siege that lasted several hours. Sporadic gunfire could be heard inside the building where the gunmen had holed up, but several people managed to escape, officials said. The latest toll was given by Security Minister Mohamed Abukar Islow at a cabinet meeting at which ministers approved the dismissal of intelligence agency boss Abdillahi Mohamed Sanbalooshe and police chief Abdihakim Dahir Said.

The removal of the officials comes soon after the abrupt resignation of Somalia's defence minister and army chief on October 12, both of whom quit without explanation just two days before the massive truck bombing. Although a new army chief was named the same day, General Abdi Jama Warsame, the defence portfolio remains vacant.

Somalia's President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed swiftly condemned Saturday's attack, saying it would not halt the country's determination to fight back. In Sunday's statement, the information minister said five people had so far been arrested in connection with the October 14 attack.

To date, no group has claimed responsibility for the truck bombing, though Shabaab militants have been widely blamed. The Shabaab lost its foothold in Mogadishu in but has continued its fight, launching regular attacks on military, government and civilian targets in the capital and elsewhere. A Namibian comic book Shona Ngava Many people grow up looking up to certain heroes and heroines either from their favourite comic books or favourite super hero movies. These movies and comic books provide relief and entertainment to many people when they need it.

The same can be said about the Namibian Science fiction and futuristic comic book called Keeper. The book was designed and illustrated by Silas Mentos Nanogolo and the storyline concept was done by Shaimemanya Kondjashili. Kondjashili says they realised that not many young people were reading enough and that inspired them to work on the comic book. It took them close to four years to work on their comic because they wanted it to have the best quality. The plot of the movie revolves around Ethan Daniels or Cetrix who is the protector and the Keeper of earth.

The timeline of the book is set in Ancient Europe and in Zimbabwe. Kondjashili says that they wish to create awareness about history and many other important issues through the book as the story line and concept develops. He revealed that they printed copies of the book. This is the first series of the book titled Volume 1 issue 1 and he says they plan on releasing the second issue of the book end of November. The comic features a sleek and colourful design that would entice a person into reading it.

Some of the characters such as Ash, Emily and Ellahius will make you want to read the book the moment you open it. The comic book can also be used by the authors to put emphasis on many problems such as, alcohol and drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, peer pressure as the plot continues. What makes you beautiful? What makes you…you? Beauty is a word with different meanings, yet does beauty lie in what society says it does, or is there a bigger picture?

Tulipomwene Kalunduka Modern society is completely obsessed with physical appearances. We judge each other based on the newest trends, televised illusions and celebrity images, to make us look specific. We have become more obsessed with this illusion of beauty, that we have developed technology in order to change our bodies or alter photographs to make us look like what we feel is beautiful.

Who said that in order to be beautiful, you have to be a model on the front page of a magazine or that you have to alter your physique to fit this model of beauty? Beauty is not about blue eyes, straight noses, slim physiques, your weight, height or clothing style.

It is not determined by the amount of pores, blemishes or pimples on your face. Your pores and blemishes are the flaws that define you as a person. You are not defined by your looks. Your beauty is not defined by it either. What lies with you, is what defines you.

Beauty is not meant to please the eye but the rather the mind and heart. People are more captivated by a unique personality, than an eye-catching face. Your beauty is skin deep and there is no shade to that. Why do we as teenagers deprecate each other? We are all beautiful. Beauty is not about what you see on the outside, it is more about your character, confidence, intellect, compassion and all the characteristics, which make you…, you. Inner beauty represents inner peace.

Two people who represent this well are Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa, and today they are extremely loved and appreciated. Not because of their looks, but rather because of their actions. Looks fade, but what you did, how you affected the world, will last forever. Look in the mirror. Stop examining your every fault, because you are a masterpiece.

She aspires to inspire through her writing and she desires to rattle the world with her words. She feels as though WHS has contributed enormously to molding and shaping her. Dear 21st century child Teopolina Natangwe Shikulo In a time and age where it feels like society and media dictates how you should act, dress and what you should do, do you still remember who you are?

Let us take a little trip down the road of truth. Have you ever tried to squeeze through s really tiny gate and even when you know you will not fit you keep squeezing anyway, hoping the gate will magically become wide enough.

Then if you do actually get to squeeze your way through, take a look at yourself and see how much harm you have done. We live in a world where everyone wants to fit in, everyone wants to be cool, wants to be popular, wants to wear the latest Five Roses jeans and hang out with coolest crowd.

All the things I have just mentioned could be your tiny gate. You want to fit in so much that you forget who you are and break yourself down to to fit through the gate. A friend is someone who you do not have to pretend and wear a mask for. They love you, not for what you have or can do, but for who you really are.

Dear 21st centure child, you do not have to be someone you are not to be accepted as the right people will accept you whether you wear branded jeans or Mr. Price jeans. Many of you have friends you cannot even really open up and talk to. You are struggling with depression and you are lonely, but you have friends over every day. You walk around with masks pretending everything is okay and terrified at the idea of anyone finding out the truth of you feel because you do not know how they will react.

One day, the weight will be too heavy to bear and you will need help. Look at your friends and evaluate, when you fall, will they catch you or will they be too busy? It is a provoking question, but you need to be able to answer it. Let us take off our masks and be real. Pretending is a role you will get tired of. Surround yourself with genuine people and life will not be so hard, but always remember to notice and recognize genuine, you have to be it.

Cinema extravaganza From features, doccies to music videos - all Namibian As a pillar of the Namibian Theatre and Film Awards, a local film screening week is a practice adopted to ensure that the Namibian people celebrate with filmmakers and industry professionals the beauty of the cinematic art. The Namibian Theatre and Film Awards NTFA will be hosting a week-long event of films in different venues in Windhoek, offering a rare experience for the community in a glorious outdoor setting. This year, the Seven Days of Namibian movies will be screening all films and music videos that are in the competition which will take place on 25 March.

The awards were founded in to celebrate, recognise and honour theatre and film practitioners. As winter draws close, the organisers thought of how Namibians could enjoy the last warm summer days by watching a selection of proudly Namibian-made films and music videos. All venues are dual settings, indoor and outdoor; having the ability to be flexible enough to screen the films even when it rains. That being said, all films are rated PG, therefore underage children are advised to be accompanied by adults.

Female filmmaker goes digital Women changing the film industry Oshosheni's views on women in Namibia and her exciting new virtual reality project will change the local film industry. International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.

Hiveluah has been breaking boundaries in the local film industry with a multi-medium digital installation which is the first of its kind in Namibia. Hiveluah said woman need to get to that place where they are go-getters. If they see something that they want they should go and get it instead of waiting to receive.

As a woman in an industry that is perceived to be male-dominated, it is important to Hiveluah for women to stand up and know that they can actually be at the forefront in the industry. To Namibian girls, Hiveluah says fear shouldn't be something that flows in their blood and they should know that it is easy to get distracted.

Don't be scared because you will fail sometimes. She further said she would like to see a balance within social and government structures and more protection of women's rights. I would like us to create a fund where women will be able to tell their own stories because it reflects what women are going through from their point of view.

There are many women's stories being told by men because there are no inhibitions towards them. Hiveluah's idea to have a Virtual Reality VR exhibition came from an interest in new technologies and her curiosity as to how Namibians could adapt to them and use them on a daily basis. She has been exposed to a lot of VR activities in Johannesburg and Berlin when it was still being experimented and she got very curious and the debate around VR possibly taking over cinematography drove her interest further.

Her exhibition titled 'Evoking Origin' is a multimedia digital installation and will be on display from 16 March to 1 April at the National Art Gallery's Upper Gallery. The exhibition consists of motion pictures and degree VR. Everything in this exhibition has a beginning, an original source and a set of instructions to help you navigate through whatever may come.

Hiveluah and her team don't have much to showcase as they are also trying out works in progress. It's about people finding out their comfort zones because VR is not for everyone. Some consider it freaky or scary about the fact that one will be in this place turning around in a degree orbit and everything appearing to be so real.

The films have been shot around the city of Windhoek. In this exhibition, we are ushered into the new digital age. The exhibition explores how it can fit into our authentic cultures and traditions. This exhibition is an honest reflection of my own reality. This authenticity can be 'fabricated', 'recreated' and 'relived' in the VR experience. Is it causing us to disregard our roots, origins, cultures and values?

Or can it become an equally authentic part of our reality? Dear Namibian artists Invest in yourself. The greatest decision you can ever make is to plough back into your career. There are way too many success stories and you can become one of them. Some of you have been in the industry for many years and you have nothing to show for it. You do not have a studio, you do not own a camera, you do not have a publicist, a manager and so many other essentials that are needed for you to progress and excel in your career.

If you have been in the industry long enough, you must have learned a couple of essential skills. Can you make your own songs? Can you edit videos? Can you play any instruments? Investing in yourself does not necessarily mean you pump money into your career. It relies heavily on the kind of skills you have managed to acquire over the years. While financial investment is an important aspect needed to create a professional product, it is not the only or even the most crucial investment that you can make.

I know many artists who do not even have their own cameras for shooting videos and that is totally unacceptable especially if you raked up valuable experience over the years. How do you expect the corporate industry to invest in you if you cannot even expand on your own brand? And this is not an attack on any artists, just a wake-up call, more so to the upcoming artists.

Investing time in educating yourself first will help you feel more confident in tough situations, avoid you making the same mistakes or even help you to make the decision to walk away from ventures that simply are not working out anymore. You must invest your time, your energy, and your all into your craft if you want to create a recipe for success. There have been showbiz workshops organised by Bank Windhoek.

These workshops were organised with the single purpose of teaching the artist about the industry and how they can better their careers in the industry, but the turn-out has been very disappointing and this only reflects badly on our industry. Attend such workshops and learn and just get some knowledge. Sometimes you have to reinvent and refine your brand to attract a new audience. Capitalising on one's brand is a lot like investing in your health. If you regularly go to the gym, you know your efforts are wasted if you don't eat the proper foods to help gain muscle mass or lose weight.

In personal brands, you are much less likely to get involved in business ventures that may actually bring the quality of your brand's image down. Because for you, your vision is clear. You know what's important and you know what you're worth because you invested in yourself first. Lutombi confident about completion of northern roads Roads Authority RA chief executive officer Conrad Lutombi is confident that the company will deliver the long-awaited roads in the north by the end of this year.

Lutombi was giving an update on Wednesday on the ongoing construction of the Okatana-Endola and Uuukwiyu-Uushona roads, which were due for completion last year. On the Okatana-Endola road, Lutombi said the delays were caused by budgetary constraints experienced last year and a change of contractors. He said the new contractors were nearing completion the road would be opened by May. The kilometre road, incorporating a dike which stretches to Onhuno, was supposed to be completed in November The delay resulted in water being unable to flow the way it was supposed to, causing many houses in the area to be flooded.

Oshana Region Governor Clemens Kashuupulwa expressed disappointment over the delays during a meeting held between his office and the RA. On the Uuukwiyu-Uushona road in the Omusati Region, Lutombi said the RA was faced with a challenge of completing the Uuukwiyu stretch because of a shortage of materials.

He said with this road too they faced budget issues although contractors were ready to continue working on the road, adding that the RA was confident that all these roads would be functional by the end of the year. More destinations for Air Nam Air Namibia, Condor in code-sharing deal Passengers will be able to choose from nine weekly connections between Frankfurt and Windhoek in summer and seven in winter. Condor and Air Namibia recently concluded a code-sharing agreement.

This agreement will allow Condor passengers in Germany to have access to daily flight connections to Windhoek. The twice-weekly Condor flights from Frankfurt on Mondays and Fridays are being supplemented with flights from Air Namibia. This means that passengers can make their plans with more flexibility and chose from nine weekly connections during the summer flight plan and from seven weekly connections in the upcoming winter.

From April onwards, all code-sharing flights will be available. Subject to the approval of the German Civil Aviation Authority and the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority, the agreement is expected to begin with the summer flight schedule.

In addition to code-sharing flights, the two airlines will offer other complementary connections of the partner airline on their respective websites. Apart from daily direct connections to Windhoek, visitors to the Condor website can also choose flights to eight destinations in Southern Africa. The range on airnamibia. In particular, destinations such as Minneapolis, Seattle, Austin and Barbados will enhance the Air Namibia route network. Depressed uranium prices present a challenge Uranium producers are positive the spot price will recover but are also concerned that the current low prices pose a challenge to the profitability of the mines.

It is noteworthy that the various operations are still spending considerable funds to position themselves for the time when the price is moving up again. Nevertheless, in these economically trying times the industry relies heavily on the cooperation and understanding of both central and regional government since the continued funding from parent companies and the ability to raise additional funds through stock exchanges depend heavily on a stable and efficiently administered investment climate.

Analysts give first impressions Debt, deficit under discussion Finance minister Calle Schlettwein wants to reduce the budget deficit. Analysts shared their first impressions of the national budget right after it was tabled in the National Assembly on Wednesday afternoon and welcomed finance minister Calle Schlettwein's budgetary stance.

Capricorn Asset Management analyst John Venter was fairly optimistic about the government's plans to reduce the budget deficit and debt. The main agenda of the Ministry of Finance was to achieve fiscal consolidation without stifling growth. The plan [was] to reduce the budget deficit, and subsequently debt level, by prioritising resource allocation and improving the quality of spending, all the while stimulating growth by realigning expenditure with development goals and engaging the private sector on infrastructure development.

Venter did not think trade gains would be realised, though, because of slowed economic growth in South Africa and Angola. This puts growth expectations at a risk. While the debt stock is forecast to grow further, the interest burden is expected to decrease significantly over the Medium Term Expenditure Framework.

This would suggest that government expects to roll a large portion of its debt into much cheaper funding, an unlikely scenario. Losing this rating would lead to longer-term debt sustainability issues as it would greatly increase the cost of refinancing Namibia's current foreign debt.

However, clarity on a number of announcements still needs to be sought, specifically as it relates to tax reform implementation. Solo Sandeng's remains found The remains of a Gambian opposition activist, whose death last year sparked a series of protests that were once rare in this small west African country, have been exhumed by a team of investigators, police said on Wednesday.

Solo Sandeng, the youth leader for the United Democratic Party, was arrested on 14 April for spearheading a peaceful demonstration demanding electoral reforms ahead of December elections. Sandeng was allegedly tortured by security forces and died after the arrest.

Sandeng's death was a rallying point for the opposition, sparking further protests that led to the arrest of more activists. Protests were rare in Gambia before elections last year that saw President Yahya Jammeh, who ruled for more than 22 years, lose the presidential vote to the opposition coalition's candidate, Adama Barrow.

Jammeh rejected the election results, but finally flew into exile in January amid international pressure. His government had been accused of human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests, torture and killings of opponents. After Barrow's presidential victory, many opposition activists were released from prison. Last month, nine former high-ranking officers at the National Intelligence Agency allegedly linked to Sandeng's death were arrested and charged with murder by a Gambian court.

Conta, the police spokesperson, said the former director of operations for that agency, the body known to imprison Jammeh's opponents, led investigators to the site where Sandeng was buried in the coastal fishing village of Tanji. Dutch far right grows Immigrants face tougher times in Netherlands Dutch polls suggest the far-right ticket will double its vote in the March 15 election, riding perceptions that many years of Muslim immigration threatens to erode Dutch national identity.

Despite statistics showing there are fewer foreigners in the Netherlands than commonly believed, many voters feel Muslim immigrants are failing to integrate and running down a once-generous health and welfare system. In the northern coastal town of Groningen, dozens of mainly Muslim men and women - Africans, Arabs and some Iranians — sit at bare tables and chat quietly in the living quarters fashioned out of a ship where hospital patients were once treated.

They are awaiting decisions on appeals of government rejections of their asylum applications, a process that has dragged on for years during which the Netherlands began to crack down hard on economic migrants. About 30 other Dutch cities and towns run BBB shelters too. They accommodate thousands of asylum seekers in legal limbo. Rutte's government, has under the populist pressure of Wilders imposed some of the toughest immigration policies in the European Union since It has cut off funding for BBB facilities and shortened the period of shelter for failed applicants to 28 says unless they agree to leave and stay in semi-detention prior to deportation.

The nationalist current changing Dutch politics reflects a deep souring of public attitudes towards immigrants in a country long known for liberalism and multicultural tolerance, rooted in centuries of maritime history. The welcome showered on hundreds of thousands of Moroccan and Turkish workers a few decades ago has turned to resentment at open-door, pro-EU policies under mainstream parties that may drive 20 percent of voters into the PVV's arms at the polls next week.

That could make Wilders' party the biggest in parliament, though it is still unlikely to enter government as all its mainstream rivals have vowed to ostracise the PVV. Groningen and other municipalities decided to pay for migrant shelters themselves after talks with Rutte's cabinet about funding the BBB programme collapsed.

Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, accused mainstream parties of not standing up to populists ahead of elections in the Netherlands, Germany and France, but instead adopting their policies for short-term political gain. Such criticism has not swayed Rutte's conservatives. He published an open letter in January, weeks before election campaigning began, telling immigrants to accept Dutch values and blend in or go home. Immigrants reacted with consternation and anger in social media posts.

The finance minister has been under pressure from the word go and in light of an extravagant public sector splurge over the years, there was a need to tame expenditure this time around, given the tough economic conditions. Government has resolved to spend billions in a number of priority areas including housing, social safety nets and poverty eradication, while education and health continue to receive huge chunks from the budget cake.

An improvement in the SACU revenue pool is expected to be a huge boost in terms of revenue generation. Equally government must now collect taxes more efficiently than ever before to help improve state revenue. The situation was attributed to improved SACU receipts as well as improved domestic revenue streams. Also, the minister must be commended for speaking out on corruption, which has become so rampant and appears to be institutionalised.

One can only hope that other cabinet ministers and senior government officials will heed this call and uphold good governance. On job creation, it however appears that the authorities are yet to hatch a proper plan to create decent employment for the many unemployed Namibians, particularly the youth.

We are not investing enough in the youth and programmes associated with them such as sport. Government must seriously consider new interventions to amongst others, help fund young entrepreneurs who have the potential to create employment. We must also encourage entrepreneurship and innovation. Government has been investing heavily in poorly run parastatals and it is high time that results-based management systems are implemented to stop the rot at state-owned enterprises.

Are you smarter than a Fourth Grader? Have you ever had to complete a quiz which they say is meant for a Fourth Grader, yet you struggle to get the answers right? Well, you are not alone — I too have failed nine out of ten of those tests.

If you, like me, are frequently subjected to solving mathematical formulae of your fourth Grader that leaves you wondering how you on earth you managed to pass Grade 12 in , then you know what I am talking about. The teachers would call it homework, but I think they are secretly passing the buck over to us parents. Mind you, my years of mathematics involved the collection of ice-cream sticks and beer tops to use as aides in class.

Never was I expected to explain why the factorisation of 24 is infinite…or something like that! Seriously, I only find out about human reproduction some two weeks ago when my nine-year old girl shockingly explained the process to me in stark details. I knew trouble was in the offing when I sat her down as I figured it was time I inform her of the birds and the bees.

Turkey coup trial resumes A mass trial in Turkey restarted yesterday of more than suspects, including former generals, accused of being among the ringleaders of last year's coup bid to unseat President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The suspects face life sentences if convicted of charges ranging from using violence to try to overthrow the government and parliament, to killing nearly people. Turkey blames the 15 July coup attempt on Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, a claim he strongly denies. Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in the United States, is among several of the suspects named in the indictment but are on the run, with the rest set to appear in court.

The attempted coup left people dead, not counting 24 coup-plotters killed on the night of the putsch attempt. Also among the suspects in one of Turkey's highest-profile prosecutions are several high-ranking military officers including ex-air force commander Akin Ozturk. The case is being heard in Sincan near the capital Ankara, at a facility that was purpose-built to hear coup-related trials.

The trial is one of many being held across the country to judge the coup suspects in what is the biggest legal process of Turkey's modern history. The government has launched a massive crackdown under state of emergency laws imposed in the wake of the failed coup which have been extended several times. Over people, including public sector employees, have been sacked or suspended over alleged links to the coup while 50 people have been arrested since July This week will also see other hearings in Istanbul including journalists from opposition Cumhuriyet newspaper who are standing trial on charges of aiding and abetting terrorist organisations.

She aims to inspire and motivate the youth.
